Emergency dump clearing
|
|
Hurricane Stan left Panajachel with no road access to the municipal waste dump. After five days of continuous rain, and two days for the community to start evaluating the damages and plan on immediate recovery actions, waste had accumulated in homes with no water or electricity, representing a highly potential health threat, incrementing the fear in town. The deluge added much more trash than normal domestic and commercial production by destroying peoples household appliances, beds, working materials, precious clothes and kitchen utensils, furniture, rugs, everything of their humble belongings. The production of solid waste scaled up to 20 times normal production in the three weeks following day six, when the rain stopped.
Many local citizens organizing relief efforts and the local mayors office asked Pro-Lago for help in eliminating this health threat in such difficult times. The only dumping space available was on the roadside by the only bridge communicating both sides of town, and ready to fall in the river.
Thanks to your support, Pro-Lago was able to reestablish access to the municipal waste dump and transport all that infectious material away from peoples path and avoid it from reaching the lake.
We are very thankful for your assistance.

The same day raining stopped, trash started accumulating by the bridge.
